this weekend: flying trapeze, good times!

This weekend, we’ll be doing lots of celebrating, and even swinging on the trapeze at the Trapeze School of Boston, as my son Roman turns 12!!  Can’t wait!  The trapeze school offers trial swings for $10, 3 swings for $25, and a variety of full classes. (They also have locations in NY, DC, LA, and Chicago.)

Also, a quick reminder:

  • This Saturday December 3, Chrissy Snyder and Amanda Califano will hold a 2 hour Holiday Kick-Off Yo-Co (Yoga and Core Fusion) workshop from 4-6pm at exhale Battery Wharf.  Holiday music and festive lights will make for a great start to the season!  The first 15 people to sign up will receive a special gift bag filled with exhale goodies.  Check it out under the Workshops/Events tab of the online schedule.  (The regular 4:45 pm Core Fusion class is cancelled today for this workshop.)

this weekend: happy veterans day and world hoop day!

Not only is today an eerie 11/11/11, but it is Veterans Day AND World Hoop Day!

***Spoiler Alert!***

The Boston Hoop Troop will break it down with two Hoop Flash Mobs today!  One at 12 noon, South Station and the other at 6:15pm in Central Square.  If you’ve got a hoop, you’re welcome to join!  If you’re in either of these areas, keep an eye out, this is sure to be entertaining!  You can find other World Hoop Day events on the official site http://www.worldhoopday.org/whd-events/worldhoopday2011/.

Today we will also honor the women and men who have served our country (like my brother Mike and his wife Holly!)  If you’d like to give a little something back today, consider donating to a good cause.

Enjoy the day, and the weekend!

this weekend: j m barrie’s peter pan in boston

This weekend I’m looking forward to taking my family to see J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan at Boston City Hall Plaza.  The coolest part is that Ian, an exhale Chicago Core Fusion teacher will be appearing in the show.  How cool!  Ian will be subbing Core Fusion classes here in Boston while the show is in town (until New Years.)  It’ll be fun having him around!

Here is the write-up from Boston.com:

Peter Pan – the spectacular new 360 degree multimedia stage production of J M Barrie’s classic story, performed in a state-of-the-art theater tent, flies into Boston’s City Hall Plaza this fall. More than 500,000 people on two continents have enjoyed this unique theatrical experience featuring 23 British and American actors, stunning puppets, epic music, and dazzling flying sequences performed in the world’s first 360-degree CGI theater set. You’ll feel like you’re flying!

The London’s Daily Express called it ” An immensely thrilling ride to be enjoyed whether you are 8, 18 or 80″ and the San Francisco Chronicle said “Peter Pan provides enough spectacle and aerial acrobatics to compete with any Cirque show.” Bring the family!

Can’t wait to check it out!

hoop classes with the boston hoop troop

Ever since I saw my first hoop dance performance with Lolli Hoops of the Boston Hoop Troop, I have been in awe of this beautiful circus art, and excited to give it a try.  (If you’ve never seen it, go on YouTube right now and look up ”hoopdance.”  It’s SO cool!)  For the month of March I finally had the chance to take a Beginning Hoop Series at the Dance Complex in Cambridge with Lolli Hoops herself.  Not only is she an incredibly talented hooper, she is also a lovely, outstanding teacher.  I can’t believe how many moves she taught us in just 5 classes.  She also makes and sells custom hoops — regular and collapsible for easier travel.   I’ve been taking mine with me to work so I can keep practicing!  I look forward to taking more classes from Boston Hoop Troop in the future! aerial yoga teacher training

Instructors Crissy Trayner and Carrie Tyler demonstrate yoga poses on the silks.  Photos by papayaimages.com
When I first heard of Rasamaya Flying Aerial Yoga, I made an intention to one day be trained in this beautfiul fusion of circus arts and yoga.  Earlier this month I finally had the opportunity to do so.  The training was led by Carrie Tyler, creator of the Rasamaya method of yoga and movement, along with partner in crime Crissy Trayner, in Dover, New Hampshire, home base of Carrie’s studio, Dover Yoga and Pilates.

Carrie and Crissy are movement teachers, with extensive backgrounds in yoga, and many hours of aerial training from the New England Center for Circus Arts in Vermont.  Aerial yoga is what you get when you take your asanas off the ground and onto the fabrics.  In the training, I learned how to put together a 2-3 hour workshop starting with yoga on the mat, and proceeding onto the silks for some basic aerial instruction including climbing and foot locks, conditioning work and a chance to try out “aerial sun salutations” and some fun and challenging poses.

This work is physically demanding.  Those with a regular mind body practice such as yoga or Core Fusion can expect to be exhausted, but very impressed by how much they can achieve even the first day.  Core strength, upper body strength, and flexibility will benefit your aerial yoga practice, but there are modifications that can make much of this work accessible even for those who are less conditioned.  For more information on becoming certified in Rasamaya Aerial Yoga you can visit Rasamaya.com.  If you’d just like to try it out for yourself, workshops will be offered periodically through Carrie Tyler’s two studios, DoverYoga.com, and RasamayaNewburyport.com

If you’d like to take a workshop with me, let me know!  Possible locations for future workshops include Woburn, and Newburyport, Mass.

I am so grateful to be living my bliss!  Big thanks to Carrie and Crissy for this wonderful experience, and also to Chris of PapayaImages.com for the beautiful photos he captured at the training.

:)
